Until July 2025, Godwyns was the Head of Communities at eLife, an innovative science publisher, where he oversaw global programmes supporting scientists in capacity building, mentoring, strategic participation, and partnership development.
During this time, he collaborated with a wide range of initiatives, including PREreview, Open Life Sciences (OLS),African Reproducibility Network (AREN),AfricArxiv, and ECRcentral, among others. He also initiated and established theGlobal South Committee on Open Science (GSC) and the Community Voices Podcast.
Godwyns Onwuchekwa is a community builder and strategic specialist with over 15 years of experience across the public, private, and voluntary sectors. His work focuses on inclusive engagement, leadership development, and promoting mental health and wellbeing within organisational culture.
He has consulted for clients including local government, university teaching hospitals, and charities, and has contributed to studies on public health issues for the UK Parliament, the European AIDS Treatment Group, and others. His practice is rooted in equity, advocacy, and meaningful stakeholder involvement.
A seasoned patient representative, Godwyns brings deep insight into collaborative approaches that centre dignity and voice, drawing on the Asset-Based Community Development model.A committed volunteer, he continues to support initiatives in education, homelessness, and the judiciary. He holds a degree in Computing with a specialisation in Multimedia Technologies, a Certificate in Community Engagement and Mental Health, and advanced training in bias awareness and motivational interviewing.
For him, there is never a dull moment: when not at a local justice meeting, he may be found tending his allotment, singing with a local group, or contributing to one of the many projects he freely gives his time to.
Based in Derbyshire, he is also a keen amateur gardener and an enthusiastic tenor, with a particular love for a well-sung harmonised hymn.
